Using Khata: expenses, budgets and Telegram

Adding an expense

Tap +, type what it was for and the amount. Khata picks a category and icon from your words, so "taxi to airport" becomes Transport. If it guesses wrong, change the category once and Khata remembers for next time.

Day, week and month

The home screen has Day, Week and Month tabs. Weeks and days open and close, and the summary on top shows your income, what you spent and what is left for the month.

Salary

Add your salary for each month yourself (and any bonus or freelance income). If you are paid on, say, the 25th, set Month starts on day 25 in Settings.

Budgets and recurring expenses

• Set a monthly budget per category. You get a warning in the app and on Telegram at 80% and 100%.
• Add rent, EMIs or subscriptions as recurring and they appear on their day by themselves.

Analytics

Separate pages for the category breakdown, spending trend, month vs month, and smart insights. You can also export any date range to Excel or CSV from Settings.

Months: carry forward or start fresh

When a month ends, Khata asks what to do with what is left (or overspent): carry it forward into the next month, or start fresh. If you carry it, add next month's salary and it is added on top of the balance. The Monthly log tab keeps a one-line summary of every past month, not entry by entry, and each month has a PDF report.

Reports and your month in review

• Open Reports to download a PDF for a day, a month, a year or any dates. Money out is red and money in (if you include your income) is green. Excel and CSV are there too.
• When a month ends, Khata shows animated review cards: what you spent, your top category and how you did against last month. Replay any month from the Monthly log.
• The first time you open Khata each day you get a short, encouraging message.

Faster ways to add

• Repeat last and your most frequent items appear at the top of the add form.
• Speak an expense ("chai 20 upi"), or paste a bank or UPI message and Khata fills in the amount, the shop and the date.
• Press and hold the app icon on your phone and choose Add expense.
• No signal? Expenses you add are kept on the phone and added automatically when you are back online.
• Deleted by mistake? Tap Undo in the message that appears.

Search, goals and money lent

• Search finds any expense by words, category, how it was paid, dates or amount.
• Goals track what you are saving for. Lent & borrowed tracks money between you and people. Both are private to you.
• Year is a look back at the whole year: totals, months, categories and standout moments.

Settling up

Save your UPI ID in Settings and people in your groups can pay you in one tap from Balances. Use Remind to nudge someone who owes you.

Privacy and settings

• Turn on App lock to ask for a PIN (or your fingerprint) when Khata opens. It stays on that phone.
• Choose a weekly or monthly summary email in Settings.
• Pick your language: English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil or Telugu.
• Use Send feedback in Settings to tell us what to fix or build next.

Install it

On Android or desktop Chrome tap Install app on the home screen. On iPhone open Khata in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.

Telegram

Link the bot, then send /spend 250 taxi to airport. Other commands: /today, /balance and /undo. Turn budget warnings on or off with /notify khata off.
